What level is your child at?

GCSE Chemistry has a reputation for being the most mathematical of the three sciences at GCSE — and for good reason. While Biology rewards memory and explanation, and Physics is built on equations and graphs, Chemistry demands both: students must balance equations, perform multi-step mole calculations, interpret practical data, and explain the behaviour of atoms and molecules at the same time. For students who are comfortable with maths, this is manageable. For those who are not, it can feel overwhelming.

Where students typically fall behind

The two areas that cause the most problems are quantitative chemistry (moles, concentration, yield and atom economy calculations) and required practicals. The mole concept is genuinely abstract — it requires students to think about quantities of particles at a scale they cannot observe — and it underpins a large number of exam questions across Paper 1 and Paper 2. A shaky grasp of moles will cost marks throughout the paper, not just in the obvious calculation questions.

The required practicals are a different kind of difficulty. Students often remember doing them in class but do not remember why — what the method was designed to control, what the results actually showed, and how errors might have crept in. Exam questions about required practicals are predictable, and they are very learnable with the right preparation.

What a GCSE Chemistry tutor typically covers

A tutor will start by reviewing your child’s recent test results and identifying the specific topics and question types holding them back. Typical focus areas include:

  • Atomic structure and bonding — the difference between ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, and how structure explains properties such as melting point and conductivity.
  • Quantitative chemistry — mole calculations, relative atomic mass, concentration in mol/dm³, percentage yield and atom economy, with clear procedures rather than formula memorisation.
  • Chemical changes — reactivity series, electrolysis (including half-equation writing at Higher), and the chemistry of acids and bases.
  • Rates and equilibrium — interpreting rate graphs, understanding catalysts, and — for Higher — Le Chatelier’s principle and how to predict the effect of changing conditions.
  • Organic chemistry — the alkane and alkene series, cracking, polymerisation and the functional groups students need to identify and name.
  • Required practicals — a tutor will work through each one systematically, making sure your child can describe the method, identify variables, explain the purpose of each step, and evaluate results.

The maths within chemistry

Unlike Physics, where the mathematical content is foregrounded in the specification, Chemistry’s maths requirements can catch students off guard. As well as mole calculations, students need to be comfortable rearranging formulae, working with standard form for very large and very small numbers, calculating percentages, and interpreting graphs with non-obvious scales. A tutor will flag any gaps in mathematical technique early and work on them alongside the chemistry content.

How exam boards differ

AQA and Edexcel are the most common boards, but OCR and WJEC/Eduqas are widely sat. The required practical lists differ between boards, the order of topics in the two papers varies, and some Higher-tier content appears at Foundation level in certain specifications. Frequently asked questions

My child finds the moles calculations really confusing — is this something a tutor can fix?

Moles is the topic that trips up more GCSE Chemistry students than any other, and almost all of the difficulty comes from not having a clear procedure to follow. A good tutor will go back to what the mole actually represents, build up the formula triangle step by step, and practise calculation questions until the method is secure. Most students who struggle with moles have a breakthrough relatively quickly once they have one-to-one attention on this specific area.

How important are the required practicals for the written exams?

Very important. All the major exam boards include questions that draw directly on the required practicals — asking students to describe a method, identify sources of error, suggest improvements or interpret unfamiliar results. Students who only know the theory and not the practical procedure leave marks on the table. A tutor will work through each required practical so your child understands the purpose, variables and analysis, not just the steps.

Does the tutor cover Higher tier chemistry topics like equilibrium and organic chemistry?

Yes. Many of the Higher-tier topics — dynamic equilibrium and Le Chatelier's principle, organic reaction mechanisms, electrochemistry — are the same areas where students lose marks because they are taught quickly at the end of Year 11. A tutor who knows the Higher specification well will make sure these topics are covered properly and that your child can apply them to exam questions.
