Why English tutoring is unlike tutoring in other subjects

In Maths or Science, a correct answer is unambiguously correct. In English, there are no correct answers — there are only better and worse responses, judged against a mark scheme that rewards analytical precision, structured argument, and the ability to select and interpret textual evidence. This makes English simultaneously one of the most rewarding subjects to tutor and one of the most commonly misunderstood.

Many students (and parents) assume that if a student reads widely and writes often, their English grade will look after itself. This is not quite true. GCSE and A-Level English examiners assess specific skills in a specific structure, and students who have not been taught that structure — who have not practised the particular way of framing a point, selecting evidence, and explaining its significance — frequently underperform relative to their ability.

A good English tutor teaches these skills explicitly and gives students frameworks for applying them under timed conditions.

GCSE English: Language and Literature are separate challenges

GCSE English is in fact two qualifications — English Language and English Literature — with meaningfully different demands.

English Language tests students on reading unseen prose and non-fiction, and on producing creative or transactional writing. The reading questions assess inference, language analysis and structure analysis; the writing questions assess audience awareness, vocabulary range and structural choices. A tutor who works specifically on Language will focus on building a toolkit for each of these question types.

English Literature tests students on set texts and poetry. Students must be able to write extended analytical responses under timed conditions, often without access to the texts themselves. This means tutoring involves both deepening understanding of the texts and drilling the ability to recall and deploy evidence precisely and quickly.

A-Level English: developing the academic voice

A-Level English Literature demands a different kind of analytical writing: more contextualised, more theoretically aware, and more capable of sustaining a complex argument across an extended essay. Students are expected not just to analyse a text but to situate it within its historical, social and literary context, and to demonstrate awareness of how different readers might respond.

Tutoring at this level often focuses on essay planning (how to construct a genuinely analytical argument rather than a chronological summary), paragraph structure (how to balance analysis, quotation and contextualisation within a single paragraph), and voice (how to write with appropriate academic register without becoming overly formal or formulaic).

Online English tutoring: how it works

Online English tutoring lends itself naturally to the subject. Students can share draft essays or marked exam scripts through a shared document; the tutor can annotate in real time, explaining not just what to change but why the original version scored less highly. This close reading of a student’s own writing is often more instructive than any amount of model-answer study.

Sessions typically begin with reviewing any writing done since the previous session, move into focused teaching on a specific skill or text, and close with a short timed writing task. Regular short timed tasks — more useful than occasional lengthy essays — build the fluency and confidence that exam conditions demand.
